MYTHS AND URBAN LEGENDS OF PAKISTAN

Era before 2000 was one of the golden days of our lives. Technology was limited and we watched it grow from dish antenna to cable. But most amazing yet scary things were the rumors, myths and urban legends which used to spread those days. Many of the things were actually found to be true and they also had impact on our daily life.

1 – CHADDA GROUP

Chadda group should actually be referred to as “Underwear group”. The group was based on young talented individuals those days. They broke into houses, looted, plundered and attempted assault, and ran off in record time. Another amazing fact about them is that they used to apply oil or grease all over their body which made it difficult to hold on to them if they are caught. Their efficiency and speed also made people call them “Challawa”.Oh how can i forget, it is also said that they used to wear springs for jumping purposes.

It may not sound scary today but they were discovered everywhere those days and I remember the fear in my friends’ eyes when we discussed chadda and challawa group in school.

2 – HATHORA GROUP

Calling Hathora Group a myth won’t be justice. People actually died because of them. They existed back in late 80s and killed people using a hammer. Their victims were always the beggars and homeless people sleeping on roads, footpaths and parks.

Initially the police theorized that the murders were being done by a single person implying a serial killer was on lose. But later a beggar who survived the attack claimed he woke up with the sound of a car and saw 4 men wearing white clothes and black mask coming out of it. Before he could run away they got him and one of them hit him with a hammer on his head, he passed out almost bleeding to death.

The theory then changed from a serial killer to a group of killers. Nobody knew what they wanted. The mystery of this hathora group remains unsolved to this date

3 – WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF AIDS

This is a lesser known story. It rumored in Karachi that if you went to watch a movie in theater (Capri, Nishat, Bambino, Prince etc) suddenly you will be injected with HIV virus. A sticker will be pasted on you saying WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF AIDS. Some people also claimed it happening in crowded markets like Saddar.

I don’t know if this was actually true or not. I tried searching for some cases but found a few cases of Mumbai. Not of Pakistan.

4 – THE HAUNTED DEVIL’S POINT IN KARACHI

Nobody actually knows why this place in DHA is called DEVIL’S POINT. But we have received a number of Shahadatein from people saying they saw some evil looking man in the sea sitting on a chair and chanting something evil. Maybe the guy used to practice evil arts sitting there in the sea. Maybe he was a mental patient. Those days our extra sentimental moral brigade was not so active or someone would have definitely asked him what was his problem. Some would have even offered to talk to him if he needed counseling.
