Skardu – A Visual Retreat (From the diary of Amber Zulfiqar)

Skardu, the capital of Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan, is a gateway to heavenly sceneries and mesmerizing peaks that are proven to leave probably everyone in awe.

A Tour to Pakistan is incomplete without visiting this beautiful landscape that also hosts the world’s second highest peak: K-2

What Makes Skardu Special

Out of the five eight thousander peaks that lie in Pakistan, four are in Skardu including K2, Broad Peak,  Gasherbrum I & Gasherbrum II therefore, it’s totally worth a visit.

Weather Expectations

Weather here can be treacherous and drop to nearly -40°C in peak winter seasons, therefore many of the residents relocate temporarily down to Islamabad or places with relatively higher temperatures. Spring and Summer season are most ideal to explore this place.

Glaciers of Skardu

Sheer cold winds blow in from Baltoro, Biafo and Hisper glacier in this district which are some of the longest glaciers outside the polar region, hence the extreme weather conditions.

People of Skardu

You will also find remnants of Tibetan culture and traditions here who were basically their ancestors but now the majority of the population follows Islam. They are by nature very friendly and cooperative with tourists.

When to Visit

Skardu is open to visit throughout the year but due to extreme weathers, winter-visits are highly inadvisable and ideal tourist season begins from March to September

How to Get There

You can visit Skardu either via Road or by air. The Road trip is scenic but long and dangerous hence flights are best ways to save time. Moreover, they offer you a magnificent view to enjoy above the clouds.

Here is a YouTube video by Amber Zulfiqar that takes you through a comprehensive tour of Skardu in less than six minutes.
